Short answer: Wegovy® (semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk A/S) is the semaglutide medicine licensed in the UK for weight management. It is prescription-only: you can get it on the NHS through a specialist weight-management service if you meet the criteria, or privately through a prescriber or a GPhC-registered online pharmacy. Privately, it was advertised from £88.97 to £285 a month by the UK pharmacies we checked on 1 October 2026.

Wegovy or Ozempic?

Both contain semaglutide and both are made by Novo Nordisk, but they are licensed for different things. Ozempic® is licensed for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is licensed for weight management. That is why the large UK online pharmacies we checked do not sell Ozempic privately for weight loss — Boots Online Doctor, for example, states that Ozempic supplies should be prioritised for people with diabetes. If you are searching for “Ozempic for weight loss” in the UK, the licensed private option is Wegovy.

Wegovy on the NHS

NICE recommends semaglutide for weight management (technology appraisal TA875) within specialist weight-management services, for adults with at least one weight-related health condition and a BMI of at least 35 — or a lower BMI in some circumstances, as set out by NICE. On the NHS it is prescribed for up to two years, alongside diet and physical-activity support. Availability of specialist services varies by area, so your GP is the right first call.

On the NHS you pay the standard prescription charge — £9.90 per item in England, nothing in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Avoiding fake pens

The MHRA has warned repeatedly about falsified weight-loss pens sold online, including pens labelled Ozempic that contained the wrong medicine. A genuine Wegovy pen only comes from a UK-registered pharmacy against a prescription. Check any online pharmacy on the General Pharmaceutical Council’s public register and read how to spot an illegitimate seller before you pay. For tirzepatide, see Mounjaro in the UK.
